Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell founded Warp in Sheffield in 1989, initially releasing bleep techno before expanding into IDM, experimental electronic, and alternative music. Warp's Artificial Intelligence series established the blueprint for "intelligent dance music" — electronic music designed for listening rather than dancing. The label has remained on the creative frontier of electronic music for over three decades.
