Record Label
Wolfgang Voigt and Michael Mayer launched Kompakt in Cologne in 1993 as a record shop before developing into one of the defining labels of minimal techno and microhouse. Kompakt's aesthetic — hypnotic repetition, subtle textural variation, meticulous arrangement — defined the sound of European techno for a decade. The label's catalog encompasses both club-oriented techno and more introspective ambient electronic music.
Producer Notes
Kompakt productions are textbook examples of minimal composition — how much you can remove from a track while maintaining rhythmic and harmonic tension. The label's approach to sub-bass design and high-frequency texture is instructive for any producer working in electronic music.
