Record Label

4AD

LondonEst. 1979Rock

Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent founded 4AD in London in 1979 as a subsidiary of Beggars Banquet, building a label identity defined by atmospheric, art-directed post-punk and dream pop. The label signed The Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, and Pixies — artists who defined the ethereal, textural sound associated with 4AD. The label's visual identity, largely created by designer Vaughan Oliver, is inseparable from its musical aesthetic.

Producer Notes

The reverb-heavy, widescreen production on 4AD releases — particularly the Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance sides — provides ambient texture and spatial atmosphere that samples usefully into electronic and hip hop production. The label's guitar tones are some of the most distinctive in recorded music.
