CHESSRECORDS

ChicagoEst. 1950BluesR&B

Leonard and Phil Chess founded Chess Records in Chicago in 1950 as a successor to their Aristocrat label, documenting the transition from Delta blues to electric Chicago blues and early rock and roll. Chess signed Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley, capturing the raw, amplified sound that would become the foundation of rock and roll. The label's raw production aesthetic — minimal processing, maximum feel — makes it one of the most important archives in American music.

Producer Notes

Chess recordings capture the live-room rawness of Chicago electric blues at its peak — particularly the Willie Dixon-produced sides with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. The drum sounds are among the most organic and natural in recorded American music.
