Record Label
Impulse! was founded in 1960 as ABC-Paramount's jazz subsidiary, and became one of the most artistically significant labels in American music when John Coltrane signed in 1961. The label served as the home for the most radical developments in jazz — avant-garde, free jazz, spiritual jazz — under the guidance of producer Bob Thiele. Its distinctive orange-and-black sleeve design is among the most recognizable in record collecting.
Producer Notes
Impulse! recordings often capture a looser, more live-room feel than the precise Blue Note sessions, particularly the later Coltrane and Alice Coltrane records. The reverb on string arrangements and the rawness of the horn-heavy sides makes them uniquely texturally rich for producers.
