ISLANDRECORDS

LondonEst. 1959ReggaeRock

Chris Blackwell founded Island Records in Jamaica in 1959, initially to distribute ska and bluebeat to the UK Jamaican diaspora. Island became one of the most significant labels in global music by signing Bob Marley, Traffic, Cat Stevens, and U2, operating at the intersection of reggae, rock, and folk. The label's eclectic catalog and high production standards made it the gold standard of the British independent label model.

Producer Notes

Island's production across decades is consistently excellent — from the raw early reggae releases to the polished 1970s rock recordings. Bob Marley's Island recordings are among the best-produced reggae records ever made, with remarkable separation between instruments.
