Willie Mitchell was the producer behind Hi Records' signature Memphis soul sound, producing Al Green's entire classic catalogue and defining the warm, lush, slow-burning soul aesthetic of the early 1970s. His house band — the Hi Rhythm Section — played with a loose, greasy pocket that is one of the most sampled sounds in R&B. Mitchell's production philosophy prioritised feel over precision.
