Ramon Barretto Jr., known as Ray Barretto, was a New York-born Puerto Rican conga player and bandleader who bridged Latin boogaloo, hard bop jazz, and salsa across a prolific career. His 1963 hit El Watusi brought Latin percussion to pop audiences. His Fania Records albums are a cornerstone of the New York Latin sound.
