Producer Profile
Norman Whitfield was the most adventurous producer at Motown, pushing the Temptations into psychedelic soul territory with extended, politically charged productions far outside the label's pop comfort zone. His work on Papa Was a Rollin' Stone and Masterpiece essentially invented orchestral funk. Whitfield's dense, wah-drenched arrangements are among the most sampled in hip hop.
