Producer Profile
Mulatu Astatke is the father of Ethio Jazz, creating a synthesis of Ethiopian pentatonic scales and modes with jazz, Latin percussion, and funk that became one of the most sampled and beloved musical traditions outside the Western canon. His recordings in the 1970s for the Ethiopian label Amha are the primary source of the Éthiopiques series that brought this music to the world.
