HARD BOP JAZZ

Hard bop is the jazz producer's goldmine. Recorded live to tape in small New York studios between 1955 and 1968, these sessions have the snare cracks, piano chords, and horn stabs that built hip hop. Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown — all here.

What is hard bop jazz?

Hard bop emerged in the mid-1950s as a rawer, bluesier response to cool jazz. It is characterised by heavy swing, gospel and blues influences, and a more aggressive rhythm section feel. Key labels were Blue Note, Prestige, and Riverside. It is the most heavily sampled jazz sub-genre in hip hop history.

What hard bop records have the best drum breaks?

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers recordings are the most referenced for drum breaks — Blakey's heavy backbeat and powerful rim shots are unmatched. Jimmy Cobb, Philly Joe Jones, and Roy Haynes are also heavily sampled. The Blue Note recordings of these artists, engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, have a specific snap and room sound that defines the genre.
