ABOUT
Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman founded Sub Pop in Seattle in 1988, signing Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden and launching the grunge movement that defined early 1990s rock. The label's aesthetic — oversaturated, heavy, deliberately lo-fi — was a direct reaction against the polished production of mainstream 1980s rock. Sub Pop continues to operate as one of the most respected American independent labels.
PRODUCER NOTES
Sub Pop's heavy, compressed production — particularly the Jack Endino-engineered early releases — provides guitar textures and drum sounds with enormous character. The early catalog's single-mic drum recordings are among the most raw-sounding in indie rock.
