Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson founded Atlantic in New York in 1947, building one of the most comprehensive catalogs in American popular music across R&B, soul, rock, and jazz. Atlantic signed Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, and dozens of other definitive artists, operating with a rare combination of commercial savvy and genuine artistic vision.
