TrojanRecords—Reggae
FOUNDED 1968 · LONDON, UK
ABOUT
Trojan Records was founded in London in 1968 as a joint venture between Chris Blackwell's Island Records and Lee Gopthal's Beat & Commercial Records. The label became the primary vehicle for bringing Jamaican reggae, ska, and rocksteady to British audiences, releasing hundreds of records from artists who defined the early reggae sound. Trojan's catalog spans the full arc from upbeat ska through heavyweight roots reggae.
PRODUCER NOTES
Trojan productions carry the dry, reverb-free drum sound of Studio One-influenced recordings, with bass frequencies that dominate the mix. The rhythmic interplay between organ, guitar skank, and bass makes Trojan records exceptionally clean to sample in isolation.
