ABOUT

Norman Granz founded Verve in New York in 1956 following the earlier Clef and Norgran labels, creating one of the most commercially successful jazz labels in history. Verve documented Ella Fitzgerald's definitive Songbook series, signed Oscar Peterson, and built a catalog that spans bop, cool jazz, and Brazilian jazz. The label's association with prestige and quality has made it a destination brand within jazz collecting.

PRODUCER NOTES

Verve recordings tend toward the polished end of jazz production — clean, well-separated, and dynamically rich. The Ella Fitzgerald Songbook sessions and Antonio Carlos Jobim's American recordings are particularly useful for sampling harmonic and vocal content.
